Young Jamaican Farmer Getting Rich Out Of Farming/JBN

Meet Jhanoui Moncreiffe the 24-year-old farmer who uses social media as a medium to sell his produce. Now in today’s Jamaica farming is not often the choice for many young Jamaicans, neither would most of them highlight it on their Facebook and Instagram pages. But not Moncreiffe who operates under the brand ‘Farming Youth’ on his social media pages, where he has 18,000 and 3,000 respectively.

Moncreiffe says 50 percent of his total earnings are from his followers.

“Mi get a lot of customers from social media. Sometimes people will ask mi how much a pound fi mi produce and order all 50 pounds. Sometimes mi mek up to $30,000 a day,” he said, adding that his best selling produce on these platforms is string beans, which go for $150 per pound.

Originally from Jeffrey Town in St Mary, Moncrieffe said that he leased four acres of land in Moneague, St Ann, where he plants a variety of produce.

“Mi plant like pak choi, string bean, tomato, sweet potato, plantain, and banana,” he said.

“I have three acres of red peppers taking care of right now. I’m going to take it to a factory. They buy it for $50 per pound,” he added.

Moncrieffe explained that he fell in love with farming at age 15.
“I was still in school, but normally I’d follow my grandparents go pon di farm and see weh dem a do. Then mi start do mi little ting and see seh it a gwaan, so mi just continue,” he said.

And now, with the help of his social media platforms, he said that he is motivated to continue farming and wants to encourage others to get into the field.

“Lots of people inbox mi every day and encourage me and this and dat. All young youths a seh dem wah do like weh mi a do. They want to take a chapter from me, and a seh at least mi nuh stay like some yute, a smoke and a rob and dem something deh,” he said.
